One of my favorite rides ever. I did it North to South and I've heard it's a difficult ride in that direction. I didn't care a bit. It was awesome. Next time I ride it, I'll take the whole day on it and ride it both ways.

The nickname of this road "Devil's Spine". This used to be Arizona portion of US-666, the offshoot of US-66.

From Alpine, the ride begins on a not-so-twisty mountain road; before long comes an obligatory turn-around for vehicles longer than 40', for good reason. The turns soon tighten, posted speed limit drops to 25, and remains so for much of the ride to Morenci. Traffic was light; the few other southbound vehicles soon found places to pull over to let me pass. Tight turns gave me a busy time learning how best to control the extraordinary cornering ability of the slingshot. I soon noticed a curious asymmetric tire chirp. The stability control, I understand, applies brake to the outboard wheel as needed. On tight right turns, the port tire would complain with a brief squawk, but left turns brought no corresponding squeal from starboard. I supposed this asymmetry might be due to lack of passenger, but now I think it's just because right hand turns allow greater panache whenever no oncoming traffic is present, as leaving lane on the left is less serious than leaving on the right. I heartily recommend this great ride.

Interesting road with lots and lots of curves and good scenery. Not a lot of amenities along the way. Stop at the open pit copper mine overlook. Would do it again if in the area.

Great ride. The longest non stop twisty road I've encountered, but not the best.
Cattle guards are frequent, as are pot holes and tar snakes, road surface was bad. Stay alert, have fun. There was very little traffic, but a fair amount of what there was, was in my lane.
89, from Congress to Prescott, Prescott Valley to Jerome, 5*.

When running downhill, the tight hairpins can be a bit of a challenge. It is easy to go into them too fast. But, that makes it a challenging ride.
I've ridden it both south to north and north to south, twice, and look forward to doing it again.

The toughest road I've ridden for twisties. Just a great ride, take the time to enjoy the scenery. Can't miss!

My good friend who had done the Coronado Trail this time last year suggested we do this spectacular ride again this year. In '09 it was a sunny warm day. This year, in fact just one week ago today, we encountered a blizzard at 8500 ft. Within a period of 20 minutes it went from flurries to a total whiteout. We took refuge at a camp called Strayhorse Work Camp. We had camping gear but it was 30 degrees and the snow was piling up fast. Fortunately one of the cabins was open and gave us a refuge for the night. By 10 am the next morning the road was clear and we finished the ride. Motorcycle memories come in many forms. This one was more adventure than pleasure...but makes for a good story

After travelling almost every road in Arizona, I can definitively say that this is, by far, the best road in all of the state if what you want is a twisty road with changes in scenery and not a lot of traffic.

Old U.S. 666 (The Devil's Highway), now U.S. 191, also referred to as the Coronado Trail. I rode this terrific highway the middle of last month (June) and it was spectacular! We didn't have any gravel on the road and I think it may have been repaved recently. We started in Springerville, staying the night at Americas Best Value Inn the night before. Nice place with coffee in the room and a nice free breakfast as well.
Leaving Springerville and heading south there are some straightaways and sweeping curves with beautiful scenery everywhere you look. It was a bit cooler riding into Alpine at 8050 feet elevation and then on to Hannagan Meadow at 9071 feet elevation. Both these places have breathtaking scenery and worth a lot of photos.
From there you start getting into some more serious curves and slower speeds. At first there are the usual 35-45 mph curves, soon followed by a sign stating 15 mph for the next 8 miles, then a sign stating 10 mph for the next 11 miles. They aren't kidding about the speeds and if you push it you might note they didn't want to detract from your viewing pleasure with any pesky guardrails!
Not a lot of traffic down to Morenci, with their huge open copper mining operation. I wasn't too impressed with Morenci, but I guess there's worse places in the world.
We ended up riding back to the Phoenix area, a trip of about 170 miles in temperatures starting at 105a ∘ and rising to 116a ∘ before we made it home. We were totally roasted!
I intend to run this road again in a couple of months after the temperatures drop down a bit and riding U.S.60 to Springerville, through the Salt River Canyon, which reminds me of a miniature Grand Canyon, getting a room overnight then doing The Devil's Highway both north to south and back again. Going to be taking far more pictures this time around!
