I did this trip over the past fall. Great roads and cool little towns! Here's my write up with some pics: https://lcchoppers.com/?p=570

This route links up to lots of other cool little off shoots and is a good way to burn through a good 6 hours or so (from Royal Oak area) on if you're stuck in Southeast MI. Something to add is cutting off 25 after you've come around the thumb and pass through Bay Port and are about half way between Bay Port and Sebewaing (the next town on 25) start looking for Stein rd on your left or you can pass Stein and turn left on Kilmanagh, but you are going out of your way at that point. Anyway, take Stein rd down to Bay Port rd and turn right. This will take you into the coolest little postage stamp of a "settlement" called Kilmanagh. It's a town that never was. There is this cool old building with an antique art deco shell gas pump out in front. Just go there and see if you can fight the urge to immediately park your bike in front of this old building to take a picture. You'll see what I mean when you get there. You'll find yourself standing there at the weird 5 road intersection mumbling, "Cool . . ." over and over again. Have fun.

I rode around the thumb as the last quarter of a trip around the whole mitt of Michigan in August of 2008. This drive was quite nice with few cars east past Port Austin and plenty of Lake Huron views. When heading east past Port Austin be sure to fill up because there aren't any service stations for at least 100 miles. I also continued on past Port Huron down the river on M-29 to Algonac. Cute little towns down there that are not on a lot of people's radar.

I've done this ride a couple of times with some friends. We dubbed it "The Thumbnail Tour". Here's a link to a ride report on the XJRider.com forums:

Rode this route first week of July, 2014, crossed at Sarnia/Port Huron. Stayed at Port Austin overnight, probably the prettiest town on this route. Good quality roads, very little traffic, a pleasure to ride. I expected more scenes of the water, but otherwise, a good ride.

I live in lexington and Lex. to Port Austin is just a pleasant afternoon's ride for us. Other points of interest worth mentioning is White Rock historic turn-out. Uri's in Port Sanilac has good food and a great view of the harbor and Lake Huron. Forester's bar, just up the road from Port Sanilac has the best hamburgers. In Port Austin, Bank 1884 has the best dinners.

As gorgeous as advertised - lots of small towns, scenic/rest turnouts, lake views, and farm fields. Be aware that state maintained turnouts don't open until surprisingly late in the spring. While well maintained and enjoyable, these aren't the sorts of roads that sport riders will want to seek out - lots of nearly straight lines and many patches of lowered speed limits for towns.

2019 Started in Pa. to Buffalo thru Canada to Sarnia to ride The Thumb as part of our 1900 mile loop in a week which also included seeing all 5 Great Lakes. The Thumb was surely a nice ride and recommendable.

I did a similar ride in September 2008. The scenery was indeed beautiful, and the ride was peaceful. Aside from a little bit of construction (which ended up stopping us while my ride partner and I were both on our reserve tanks!), the ride was largely uneventful. M-25 from Port Huron all around the thumb to Bay City is a wonderful ride, especially in the fall, colors are great! The Edison Inn in Port Huron has good food, wonderful view. Lexington has cute shops, Slap Jacks has a tasty lunch. Grindstone City has Captain Morgans where you can sit out on the patio and enjoy the view along with a ice cold beer and always great food. Caseville has a Cheeseburger festival in August that is wild and crazy!!! And Bay City downtown on the riverfront, try the Fishhouse great view of the river and decent food.

Growing up in the tri city area and having been to Caseville a few times growing up I had never actually been around the thumb. I have since moved to Metro Detroit but decided I was going to take this trip up to Flint, over to Port Huron and up M25 to Port Austin then around back to Bay City and super slabbing it home.I hadn't spoken to anyone who had ever tripped up M25 from Port Huron so I wasn't certain what to expect. Knowing that most of the Thumb is farming community I was afraid that the whole route would be boring, straight slab passing some of the larger farms in MI. I was overjoyed to find that M25 is a widely curvy road all the way from Port Huron up to the tip with lots of trees, lots of great stops along the lake, passing through lots of cute small towns and lots of beautiful plots of land. There aren't really elevation changes but there are enough curves to distract you from the fact that you're still in southern Michigan. While it's not a trip I'd care to do more than once(maybe twice) it is definitely worth the trek!

Started at Port Huron and rode around to Bay City. This is a nice ride but you don't see a lot of Lake Huron till top of the thumb, as most views are thru the trees as you ride. The better views of lake were Poet Austin to Bay city as unobstructed views. Has parks to see views but not all close. Still a good relaxing ride.

I have never been North of Fort Gratiot. Loved the ride. Great lunch spot was Boondocks,,,, outdoor patio too... Beautiful Scenery, and had the roads mainly to ourselves. Stayed the night at Au Gres Inn,, great spot for a group of bikers, as their is a covered patio with tables to relax on after a great day of biking..

This route was part of our Iron Butt trip in 2012. It was getting dark so we weren't able to see much of the scenery.
