Concur with the comment from TheNomadRider. 50 is a fun route, but the windmills pictured are actually on 219 (great ride!) and Seneca Rocks is a bit of a haul off the described route (Great ride down and back though!).

Update from West Virginia’s Road Ranger (July 31st, 2020): Route 50 is always of questionable pavement. Take care. For instance, just East of Fellowsville and west of the Cool Springs Park Exxon the pavement can have some discombobulating ripples in the road. Even after they repave the ripples come back a year or two later, other then that it’s poor to fair out to Maryland, as of June 2020.

This was a great ride with plenty of twisties, switchbacks and smooth roads. I commend the folks in WV for their upkeep of the pavement, making it a joy to ride these roads. We stopped at The Millstone BBQ for some fabulous "Hog Wings" and Banana Pudding for dessert somewhere in the middle of the ride on Hgwy 50. It was a great place to get off. They are only open certain days and seasons so check before getting your hopes up. Great scenery along this route as well as a good campground should you choose to spend the night. Hwy 50 is one of the better roads in the east. As pointed out Seneca Rocks are located elsewhere in beautiful West 'By GOD' Virginia. The wind mills are now found in several different spots. We spent 3 days trying to see all and fell short. Definitely worth a return trip.

Going East a couple of miles after you cross the Cheat River you go up "The Big Hill" This hill rises 1200 feet in 3 miles. As of this writing it was getting NEW blacktop from top to bottom.

Just one great road through and through. Not the twistiest, not the most sweepers, not the best road surface in the state, but it's the jack of all trades road once you get east of Grafton. (West of Grafton it's pretty much boring slab.)

Started this off at Valley Falls State Park by Tygart Lake(Grafton)and road WV-50E out to Aurora(just short of MD Line) and then back

Loved it! Climbing and then Cascading down Cheat Mountain is a blast. Good Road Conditions. I found the other motorist very aware and courteous of bikers.

Highly recommend this section of Road and will do it again hopefully by year's end.

I am sorry I didn't get to ride the road when it was dry. I found all the motorists were courteous. The trip was just beautiful. Can't wait to ride it again.

West Virginia, Maryland route 50 (Northwestern Turnpike) downhill ride. In 45 miles from Backbone Mountain Md. (elev. 3095') at the Maryland, West Virginia border west to Grafton W.V. (elev. 964') route 50 drops 2131 feet. In the first 17 miles it drops 1700 feet from the border to Cheat River.

This is an incredible and gorgeous stretch of road, especially when the leaves are turning color. But watch out for deer and crazy drivers, both of which are plentiful!

This is a great road - several highly technical sections, lots of scenery and generaly light traffic.
I have never seen those windmills on US 50 either but its possible i was just too focused on the road! I have seen a bank of these windmills on US219 just a few miles south of the intersection of US50.

The "rock formation seen along the way" is actually 40 miles south of Mt Storm - Seneca Rocks. Also, I know that there are windmills on Backbone mountain in Tucker County but as far as I know, you can't see them very well (if at all) from US 50. Someone taking this route and expecting to see these scenes is going to be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's a great ride - you just won't see the scenery depicted in the description.

In many parts of this road the road can get a bit ripoli. This makes things a little disconcerting on two wheels. Once they fix those areas of the road it'll be a pretty good Cruiser ride with the occasional Splash apart Misty's. Mind your speed limit in Maryland as they're a bit more aggressive with speed limits there.

Rode if from Grafton to Mt Storm... nice ride, lots of twists and shade. Quite a few trucks and gravel in several places. Pavement is all over the place, from really good to really bad. Neat little country store before ya get to WV-72 (riding east). Wish road was better in spots, but still a good ride.

Some sections of road very poor (still snow on ground, so nochance to fix them yet). And certain sections impossible to pass if get behind slow traffic.
