shhhhh! Don't tell anyone! The roads of WNC in the summertime can be full.....this one August 2,2015 was desolate. Twisties,sweepers,good surface, very little traffic........I'll be back. I live within a couple hours and haven't rode it till today. I thought i had done them all...???

Did this route as part of a ride from Roan Mountain to Marion, including the Devil's Whip. We enjoyed this section more than the Whip, as there was very little traffic, even on a Sunday in July. While it was about 90 in the low areas down the mountain, we were really comfortable in the high 70s-low 80s on this part of the ride. We did come across gravel in the corners quite a bit, but you just have to be aware.

This road is as good as any of the named roads, The Snake, The Devil's Whip, The Rattler, etc.,) in North Carolina. The advantage is it is not being pushed as a motorcycle tourist road so there is a lot less traffic. . . at least on a Tuesday in Mid-September.

Rip roarin' curves and TONS of scenery. When you get to the top of Roane, there is a pullout, which is a good place to take pics.

Rode from TN to NC. Made the mistake of trying to follow GPS. When I turned south on 143, the GPS had me take a left and we went off into some back roads that turned into DRIVEWAYS! Stay on 143 and enjoy the ride to Bakersville. At Bakersville, turn left at stop sign before the traffic light and eat at Helen's Restaurant. Plenty of parking and lunch specials. You won't go hungry if you eat there. Great road with lots of turns and hills with no traffic. Can't wait to ride it again!

Very nice leisurely ride! We started in Tennessee and rode south. Bet this is beautiful ride in the fall.

Only managed to catch this road in the wet, but even with reduced speed (in my hot hatchback) it was plain to see that this was a great road, especially leaving TN and entering NC. It got a little more interesting before Bakersville, NC, too. All in all a solid ride, and I dare say one worth trekking to. Do yourself a favor and take 80 south off of 226A right next door. It's properly silly and you're just a few miles away.

As of May 2021 this road has marking all over it, on the NC side, though the TN is probably even worse, in that I would imagine they're going to be tearing it down and repaving it in the next year or so. It doesn't really matter to me. This road, despite it's appearances, is more lazy sweepers than twisties, really. It was decent enough, sure, but nothing I'll ever go out of my way for again.
