Truly a wonderful ride with great scenery. I've ridden this twice, both times west to east and both times was blessed with great weather though pretty chilly early on as I started in the morning on each ride.

Beautiful ride. Little traffic. Much of the route is through scenery, rather than just seeing it from a distance. Loved the flavored shake at the Strawhouse Cafe'--just right on a hot day!

I was looking forward to CA-299 AND 36. Unfortunately for me, 36 was closed for repairs 7a-7p in Aug. 2018. I was on a 9-day tour around Cali. From LA, I took I-5 into the Bay area and watched the Warriors win game-7. The following day, I headed up the coast to Guerneville for a couple days of concerts and wine tasting. Then, I left for Hwy. 299. Got cold and wet coming into Arcata. Then, up the hills through really fun banked 2-lane wide curves. Got to experience some high speed turns...something my 23* of lean angle rarely allows. Lotta fun! Stay in Weaverville overnight at what turned out to be a popular (and affordable) motel that a lot of other bikers stayed at. I was right at home spinning yarns and drinking cold ones before putting it to bed that night.

Route 299 is an excellent motorcycle route. Beautiful scenery and great riding. The Strawhouse Resort mentioned in the reviews, is worth the trip alone. We experienced the best food, drink, hospitality, customer service, view, and yes, the espresso. The owners Don and Julia truly make you feel welcome and are passionate about every detail. We wanted to stay, but a few miles East is a good spot to get off the bikes and swim in the Trinity.

One of the best routes ever.... start at the coast and twisty, beautify roads all the way up the in the mountains. Small towns along the way. Then drop back down, alongside the river and those out rafting and kayaking, back into the flat heat of Redding.... GREAT ride!!

I rode this to the coast from Redding and it was spectacular. I would say this is a better road to ride than Hwy 36 but you should do both to form your own opinion.
